About

In 2010, FEMA gave a grant to the City of Austin to buy out a portion of a south Austin neighborhood with an extensive history of flooding. The houses in this section of the neighborhood were razed. The remaining neighbors worked in conjunction with the City of Austin to create the Cherry Creek Community Garden on a portion of this land in an effort to bring the south Austin community together.

The first phase of the garden includes:

  • 24 plots (8 each of 4’x8′, 4’x12′, and 4’x16′)
  • Herb spiral
  • Garden shed
  • Shaded work table
  • Shaded seating areas
  • Composting area
  • Small fruit orchard

Working together, the neighborhood and City of Austin have begun to transform the area surrounding the garden into a wildflower and native species preserve. The City has created a mulched walking trail that winds along Williamson Creek and is orchestrating riparian efforts in that same space.
